Day 4 Sunday, Sept 7 Dead and Facinating!

We started the day at the Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore, OK. What a beautiful memorial to a fascinating man! Born a few miles down the road, Will quit school and joined up with a Texas cattle drive. He became an expert rider and roper and then joined the Wild West Show. From there he went on to host a radio show, perform in Vaudeville and then on the big screen. I've always loved his quotes...a simple man with such wise words! Will Rogers is buried in Claremore along with his wife and infant son. I loved seeing the cowboy artifacts and learning more about this incredible man.

Traveling along Route 66 we came across a huge blue whale. In its day it welcomed tourists to a wonderful swimming hole. Not so wonderful now..but a fun reminder of days gone by, just as so many other things along the way. (PS a young couple from Spain took our picture!)

The formerly photogenic twin bridges near Verdigris lie in ruin now along the road on the way to Tulsa.

Lots of dead armadillo on the road. (I'll spare you pictures!)

Traveling toward Oklahoma City we stopped at yet another motorcycle museum/gift shop and had a soda and looked around. Les liked the C.H.I.P.S bike I think!

In Oklahoma City we visited the very moving memorial to the Federal Building bombing victims. I find it fascinating that the creators of the memorial could create something so beautiful and touching. A chair for each victim, walls to capture the exact moment in time, a reflection pool. So moving!

Back on the road and then staying the night in El Reeno, OK.  The original town (named by General Sheriden) was moved to avoid continual flooding. Lots of interesting history in this area! Chisholm Trail, Fort Reeno... and so much more! (Including Garth Brooks birthplace just down the road...ha!) The weather today was so perfect....Sunny and a high of 79! Hoping for more of the same tomorrow!
