Day 3 Saturday Sept 6 Three States!

When we got up this morning and looked out from our room at the Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon, MO, it was raining! After a cup of coffee with some German bikers next door, we donned our rain gear and headed over to the Elm Street Cafe for a big breakfast and then to the Route 66 Museum a few blocks away. By the time we were done there, the rain had stopped, and we were on our way! Route 66 in MO is in pretty great condition, smooth blacktop, no contruction and we were generally the only ones on the road. We really enjoyed the ride in the Ozarks...sweatshirt weather is much better than being so hot yesterday! I was surprised to see so many mobile homes..and so many churches...BIG churches in proportion to the small size of the towns we went through. We stopped for gas in Carthage and saw the "Crap Duster."
Not far from Joplin, MO we entered Kansas. Route 66 only traverses about 13 miles of Kansas. We saw "CARS on The Route" in Galena, Kansas at wonderfully restored Kan-O-Tex gas station...with "Tow Tater," which was the inspiration for Mater, the tow truck in the movie Cars.!

We stopped in Braxton Springs, Kansas at "Angels on the Route" to say hi to the owner, who is a friend of my friend,
Bernadette and then checked out the beautiful "Rainbow Bridge," the last of the three "Marsh Arch" bridges, named for the designer, that once were found along The MotherRoad in Kansas.  We met a couple from England there that took our picture on the bridge.
Our next stop was in Miami (pronounced Miam-uh) Oklahmona. We toured the Route 66 Vintage Iron Motorcycle Museum
and then ate at Waylan's KuKu Burger...with their great neon sign!
We left Miami and headed on toward Tulsa. We came across a part of the OLD Route 66 originalle paved in 1922 and in service until 1937. The road was fragile, rough gravel, and just plain scary on a motorcycle, so we turned around and headed for a post 1937 Route 66.
I was getting pretty tired of seeing black angus cattle so it seemed so welcomed to be getting into horse country. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a pick up truck (with racks on the sides of the box) going down the Main Street in town with a horse tied in the back of the truck..a saddled horse! We are spending the night in Claremore, just north of Tulsa.

  1. Oh my gosh this is so much fun!!!. Why didn't I rent a motorhome and shadow you? Of course that wouldn't be nearly as much fun for you. I am just so tickled to see the photos and read your narrative. Are you having fun??? Sure hope so.
